Sweetgrass & Juniper Smudge Stick - Canadian Grown

These beautiful sweetgrass & juniper herbal sticks smell divine! The sweetgrass and juniper were lovingly hand-bundled by people who truly care about the earth and helping others. Organic and sustainably grown on a small family farm in Canada. Approximately eight inches.

For thousands of years, herbs, woods and grasses have been harvested, bundled, dried and burned for smoke cleansing by people of all cultures around the world. This is done to cleanse and purify, and is an ancient practice shared by many cultures. We respect all spiritual paths here at Dragon Moon, which is why we offer these herbs.

Sweetgrass: Inviting good energy, Protection, Space Clearing, Blessings, and Setting Intentions. Sweetgrass (Hierochloe Odorata) is wonderful when honoring spirits and ancestors. It smells beautiful, and should only be used sparingly, and an offering given to Mother Earth in thanks when it is used. It invites in good energy, helps clear negative energy, and offers spiritual protection.

Please note that Sweetgrass is also known as Sweetflag, or Calamus Root. There are various species of this plant growing in North America, and other types grow around the world. It has been used by various cultures since biblical times. In the Orient, and in ancient Egypt, it was thought to be a powerful aphrodisiac, while the Turk’s carried the aromatic plant to thwart infectious disease. The Sanskrit Kalamas, the Roman calamus and the Greek Kalamos all refer to the reed of the plant. In North America, this plant has been used by First Nations peoples for medicinal and spiritual purposes.

Juniper: Cleansing, Purifying, Protection, Healing, Peace. Juniper bundles are burned for healing, ritual, meditation, cleansing and protective properties. For thousands of years, herbs and woods such as Juniper have been burned by people of all cultures around the world, to cleanse and purify.

Juniper seems to have a connection to animal purification as well. In “A Journey in Southern Siberia” Jeremiah Curtin (1909) describes how the Siberian Shamans used the smoke of juniper to purify animals prior to their sacrifice.

"Saining" is a Scottish word for blessing, protecting or consecrating. Sain is cognate with the Irish and Scottish Gaelic seun and sian and the Old Irish sén - "a protective charm."  Traditional saining rites may involve water that has been blessed in some fashion, or the smoke from burning juniper, accompanied by spoken prayers or poetry.

Juniper has been burned in Scandinavia for thousands of years in smoke cleansing rituals for clearing negative energy. Its use in Norway, for example, can be traced back to a time before the Vikings.

In some Native American legends, juniper berries are featured prominently as a nutritious food important to the people. A Hopi Legend notes that Juniper is one of the chiefs of the world. In a Blackfoot Legend, Sacred Otter, it describes an altar to the sun, with juniper laid upon it.
