Meaning and Origins:

The word "Beltane" is thought to be of Celtic origin, meaning "bright fire" or "fire of Bel," with "Bel" potentially referring to the Celtic sun god, Belenus.

Beltane is one of the eight Sabbats (Pagan holidays) and falls roughly halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice.

It's also sometimes called May Day.

Celebrations and Traditions:

Fire: Beltane is a fire festival, and the lighting of bonfires is a central tradition, believed to have protective and purifying powers.

Fertility: The festival is strongly associated with fertility, both in terms of the land and human relationships.

Rituals: Rituals may include dancing around a maypole, decorating with flowers, and making flower crowns.

Maypole Dance: The tradition of the Maypole dance is performed to welcome rebirth and fertility.

Food and Drink: Bannocks (a type of flatbread) and May wine (a beverage made with sweet woodruff) are traditional foods and drinks.

Modern Paganism:

For many modern Pagans, Beltane symbolizes new beginnings, love, union, and the abundance of nature.

It's a time to celebrate the energies of the earth and the blossoming of spring into summer.
