Gem Animal: Mammoth
The likeness of a mammoth has been hand carved from onyx marble by
Peruvian artisans. Prehistoric stone animals fit easily into gift
baskets and shadow boxes and are fun to create a scene when put in
plants, in the window or a Zen garden.
Onyx is a banded variety
of chalcedony. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every
color (save some shades, such as purple or blue). Commonly, specimens
of onyx contain bands of black and/or white. Onyx is thought to increase
regeneration, happiness, intuition and instincts.
Mammoths
roamed the Earth between 4,000 and 6 million years ago with various
species living in Africa, Europe, Asia and North America. Their
surviving relations are elephants and can be distinguished by their
spiral twisted tusks and in later species who adapted to living in the
cold, a thick layer of fur.
Each measure approx. 3.3 cm high x 4.3 long.
