A smudge stick is a bundle of dried herb, most commonly green or white sage, often with other herbs bundled in for extra healing and protective properties.  They have a strong, pleasant aroma when burnt.  By "smudging" a person, object or room, it is said that any bad energies are carried away by the smoke.
